John Patrick Spence was born and raised on the Capilano Indian reserve part of the Squamish Nation. He is also coast Salish people also from his fathers side. He is Haida Gwaii from the old village Massette.
The story of John's art practice
I learned how to draw coast Salish form line when I was 10 years old. I started carving cedar when I was 12. My grandfather chief Simon baker was a carver and so was my great grandfather from my dads side, chief kwinkwoyok Mark Spence.

Killer Whale: carved out of yellow cedar, with acrylic paint, and stained finish
Humming Bird: carved out of yellow cedar, with acrylic paint and pink pearl abalone inlay for eye stain finish.
Wolf: carved out of yellow cedar, with acrylic paint, and tung oil finish
